Regular practice is very important to secure improvement. Aim for five good practices every week.
Every pupil has a notebook which explains what has been covered in each lesson. Always read this as it tells you what and how to practice, and any new terms to learn.
Complete beginners should start by learning the letter names of the notes.
I encourage pupils to explore the whole instrument, for example, by playing the same tune starting in different places.
Pupils are also encouraged to memorise exercises and tunes when they have been accurately learnt.
As the weeks go by and more tunes have been mastered, allow extra time for ‘playing for pleasure’.
